Germany claimed a place in the final four of Euro 2016 with a penalty shootout victory in Bordeaux. AN extraordinary finish to what was an intense and often attrition match. Mesut Ozil gave Germany the lead after the break, only for a Jerome Boateng handball to present Leonardo Bonucci with the chance to level from the spot after 78 minutes. Three quarter-finals down and just one more to come – hosts France tackling minnows Iceland in the latest chapter of their fairytale tomorrow.

Germany were very close to being eliminated tonight with Italy a Hummels penalty kick miss away from advancing. Bonucci’s fine penalty cancelled out Ozil’s opener, but the sides could not be separated after 120 minutes. Hector was the unlikely winner in the shoot-out, though Buffon will bemoan the fact he let it squirm under his body.

Germany had a great chance to win it in extra time when Julian Draxler got what looked like an easy pass to free Thomas Muller all wrong, and then came a penalty shootout packed with drama, saves and misses. But Jonas Hector smashed the decisive kick in off Gianluigi Buffon, and that means it’s Germany versus France or Iceland in the semifinals after a dramatic night. It’s a first major tournament victory for Germany over Italy, too.
